Who says visiting temples means just getting a boring history lesson? If you stop by Gedong Songo Temple on the slopes of Mount Ungaran, what you actually get is the ultimate package: majestic mountain views, crisp cold air that makes your lungs happy, and even a natural hot spring spot.

1. The Track is Quite a Hike, But the View is Untouchable

Gedong Songo is unique because the temple structures are scattered from the bottom all the way to the top of the hill. There are 9 buildings in total (hence the name Songo, which means nine), but only 5 temple groups remain intact.

To be honest, the path between the temples is a steep uphill climb. But don't worry every time you look back, you will be treated to a stunning view of Ambarawa from above. On a clear day, the mountains of Central Java will playfully peek out from behind the clouds. The vibes? It honestly feels like you’re standing above the clouds.

2. Team Walking vs. Team Horse Riding

This is the most common dilemma when visiting.

  • Team Walking: Perfect for those who want to get some exercise or cardio done. But make sure to bring enough water, because the distance from Temple 1 to Temple 5 is quite a workout for your calves

  • Team Horse Riding: If you want to skip the exhaustion or are traveling with little kids, renting a horse is the way to go. It’s a thrilling experience riding a horse along the cliffside trails. Prices vary, starting from around IDR 50,000 to IDR 200,000 depending on the route you choose.

3. Hot Springs in the Middle of the Mist

Between Temple 3 and Temple 4, there is a natural sulfur hot spring area. The smell is definitely distinct, but soaking your feet here after a tiring walk brings instant relaxation. Plus, if the mist suddenly rolls in, the atmosphere becomes truly magical.

4. Tips to Avoid a Wardrobe Malfunction

  • Wear Sneakers: Please, do not wear high heels or slippery sandals. The path is made of stone and can get mossy and slick after the rain.

  • Bring a Jacket: You’re at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level. Even if the sun is bright, the wind is still bone chillingly cold (around 18°C).

  • Arrive Early: 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM is the absolute best time. The air is incredibly fresh, and you can get photos free from the crowds.

5. Budget Estimation

  • Entrance Ticket: IDR 15,000 - IDR 20,000 (excluding parking).

  • Horse Rental: Around IDR 100,000 (for the casual strollers).

  • Snacks: IDR 30,000 (to buy warm mendoan fried tempeh at the top a must try).
